Embracing Inclusivity: Employing Adults with Disabilities in the Bar Service Industry

As a parent of a special needs adult, it is still my job to expose her to various experiences and support her in adulthood.  We have participated in employment experiences that have been helpful to an extent, but did not provide the consistent support she needed.  It’s not just my daughter - my network of parents and their children are constantly seeking ways to offer a safe, supportive employment environment.  Luckily, in recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of inclusivity and diversity in the workplace. I’ve worked with companies across various industries to discuss disability employment and how they can better align their needs with the abilities of individuals with disabilities, from redesigning their open position to better hiring practices.  Many individuals with disabilities like and are excellent in the service industry, however, one area that has often been overlooked is the bar industry. Traditionally seen as fast-paced and demanding, the idea of employing adults with disabilities in bars may seem unconventional to some. Yet, it's a move that not only promotes inclusivity but also enriches the industry as a whole.

Breaking Down Barriers

For many individuals with disabilities, finding meaningful employment can be a daunting challenge. Despite possessing valuable skills and talents, they often encounter barriers due to societal misconceptions and stigmas. However, the bar industry presents a unique opportunity to challenge these preconceptions and create a more inclusive workforce.

By employing adults with disabilities in the bar industry, we not only provide them with financial independence but also empower them to showcase their abilities in a dynamic and customer-oriented environment. From mixing drinks to serving customers with a smile, individuals with disabilities bring a fresh perspective and a unique set of skills to the table.

Creating a Supportive Environment

To successfully integrate adults with disabilities into the bar industry, it's essential to create a supportive and inclusive workplace culture. At Sunny Daze, we provide appropriate accommodations and offer training that is tailored to their individual needs. We also ensure all individuals are supported by a job coach/mentor at each event.

As a mobile bar owner, I collaborate with disability advocacy organizations like The Arc of Bartholomew County and other local training centers to develop specialized programs aimed at equipping individuals with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the bar industry. As a former classroom teacher, I create training materials that follow Universal Design Principles to help support the development of my employees.

Enhancing Customer Experience

Beyond the social and moral imperative of inclusivity, employing adults with disabilities in the bar and service industry can also have tangible benefits for business owners, customers, and community members. Having employees with disabilities on staff can enhance the overall customer experience by fostering a more welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Customers are more likely to feel valued and respected when they see individuals with disabilities actively participating in the workforce. Moreover, employees with disabilities often bring a unique perspective that can lead to innovative solutions and approaches to customer service.

Leading by Example

The BIG vision at Sunny Daze is to lead by example, not just for the bar industry, but for other employers as well.  From helping individuals apply to offering individualized training, Sunny Daze strives to be a leading employer of adults with disabilities and hopes to share employment and training practices with employers.  By embracing diversity and providing equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities, we not only enrich our workplaces but also contribute to a more just and equitable society.

Employing adults with disabilities in the bar industry is not just about meeting legal requirements or fulfilling corporate social responsibility; it's about recognizing the inherent value and potential of every individual. It's about building a future where everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to pursue their passions and contribute to their communities.

Conclusion

Inclusivity is not a trend or a buzzword for me or my network of families - it is a calling to ensure a fundamental aspect of creating a more equitable and compassionate society. Employing adults with disabilities in the bar industry is not only the right thing to do, but it's also a decision that can enrich our businesses, our communities, and our lives. Let's raise a glass to inclusivity and toast to a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
